There is some text out there that indicate "tassels" represent a symbol of letting us wipe away the tears that are the fruition of deep contemplative prayer.

Intimate relationship with God can very well and rightly bring forth tears of pain, joy, appreciating God's awesomeness, humbleness, humility, ecstasy ... among other expressions of love as God imparts grace.
